インストールの手順を書いてみたらどうでしょうか?
例えばうちでは，(少し古いかもですが-- 2003/05/03 ---)，

ここから，
http://www.vmware.com/download/workstation.html

VMware-workstation-4.0.0-4460.tar.gz
を取ってくる．
登録すると，こんな Subject のメイルが届いて，試用のシリアルが
含まれている．

Subject: Your VMware Workstation 4 (for Linux Systems) Evaluation License
From: evaluations@vmware.com

インストール作業に入る，

$ tar xvzf VMware-workstation-4.0.0-4460.tar.gz
$ ls                   ( ディレクトリの中を見てみる．)
VMware-workstation-4.0.0-4460.tar.gz  vmware-distrib/
$ cd vmware-distrib/

$ su
Password: 
# ./vmware-install.pl 

Creating a new installer database using the tar3 format.

Installing the content of the package.

In which directory do you want to install the binary files? 
[/usr/bin] 

In which directory do you want to install the library files? 
[/usr/lib/vmware] 

The path "/usr/lib/vmware" does not exist currently. This program is going to 
create it, including needed parent directories. Is this what you want? [yes] 

と，こんな具合で進みます．
[ ] で示されるのが default の選択になるので，ほとんどそのまま
ENTER してます．
(yes/no/help) が表示される個所では，どれかを選択します．
インストール終了後，

$ /usr/bin/vmware

で起動，この最初の起動時に serial number を入力だと思ったです．
後から，Help --> Enter Serial Number でも OK なような．
( 試用後，正式に購入した時はこれで Serial Number を変更しました．)
