ここで libz で定義されているはずの gzopen 関数の実体が見つかって
いないというエラーが出てますね。

とりあえず、

  % strings /usr/lib/libz.so.1.1.3

して gzopen という文字列があるかどうか確かめて、
# 出力が長くなるので less を使って表示/検索すればいいでしょう

  # ldconfig 

して、./configure の cache を消したうえで再度やってみたらうまく
いくんじゃないかと思うのですが...
# cache は config.cache のはずですがソースを消して展開し直すと
# 確実です
## cache にヒットしていないように見えるので外している可能性大ですが...
